A New Bridge on Rubberhead
An unseasonable blizzard this morning, but generally the snow has been melting fast, with lots of trails opening up. Freshly maintained trails include: Kootenay Columbia, KC Ridge, Milky Way, Green Door, Rogers, Rubberhead, Cemetery, Lower Oasis, and Whiskey. We replaced a rotting bridge on Rubberhead, added a bridge on the McQuarrie Ck trail, and have been fixing features and signs all over the place. The recent tempest over lower Spring Cleaning has been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction, and I hope our local riders now understand that positive contributions are welcome, but that on a managed trail network on private land – there has to be a considered process.

  • Rode KC Ridge last night…being that there is rocks and logs in every turn, are we supposed to go straight down (the old line)?

    • Al,

I don’t know who’s doing it or how they rationalize such vandalism, but I’ve cleaned it all out of the way. Keep me informed with whatever you see out there.

  • Hi Stew,
Keep your head up for a downed tree on KC between the old mining school and Milky Way. It’s easy to spot so there’s enough time to slow down and do the bike limbo under it but one that you will want to give some chainsaw love to at some point.
On Wednesday there was a momma moose and yearling sighted on KC, something different for us to keep in mind when hauling a$$ around blind corners. A bit of mom to mom conversation convinced them to move along but they might not be so gracious next time.
Is this the prefered place to let you know of trail issues like downed trees?

    • Dave,

Thanks for the info. Yes this is place to let me know about such things.

  • Thanks to Stu and the trail crew for restoring the old lower Spring Cleaning line. Obviously we are all passionate about our trails and it comes down to better communication and respect on everyone’s part.

I want to add that I am not impressed by the personal attacks people have waged on this blog. Please, let’s keep this civil. And for those of you who tried to decommission the old KC line, you should give your head a shake. There many riders who enjoy the around built a couple years ago – I encourage you to focus your effort and time on building and maintaining trails rather than destroying them.

Finally, the recent destruction on Whiskey with live trees cut over the trail and stunts being chopped up is bizarre and saddening. Let’s hope people can maintain their civility (that goes for ALL land users). Remember bikers, many of our trails are on private land and we must be respectful of that. I’m not saying cutting live trees over a trail is justified (and not to mention dangerous and potentially litigious if someone were hurt), but we must consider what triggered this reckless response.
